1. Greetings!

Greetings to all from an excellent little bakery ("On the Rise") in post-card-beautiful Vermont. WiFi is a wonderful thing. Am 2 1/2 weeks into a road trip that'll get me home next week (for all of 3 days). Have made many new friends of late and I welcome you all.

(Thanks to Sue K. Riley, Cathy Main, Janet Feld and Mia Adams for the New England dates and warm Yankee hospitality. And BTW the way all of these women are big-hearted soulful singer/writers.)

2. News

a. Music News

i. New trio with Kate Campbell and Pierce Pettis!

Word's out so I may as well chime in: Pierce Pettis, Kate Campbell and I are forming a trio and will be calling ourselves The New Agrarians (after The Agrarians, the group of influential Southern poets and authors that formed in Nashville in the 30's). Whether we'll be 'influential' or not remains to be seen(!), but we're getting material together now. And while we won't be performing much till next year, there is an October festival date in AL on the calendar. [See Tour Dates below.] I have great appreciation for Kate and Pierce and I'm very excited about making music with them.

ii. This month's free audio/video podcast

This month we've posted "Trip On Love" and "Long Long Way From Here" - again taken from a great house concert I played in CO with Michael Lille earlier this year.

If you have iTunes (a free application) on your computer, you can go to the iTunes store, search for Tom Kimmel and voila! You can click on any individual podcast to download it... or you can "subscribe" to all my podcasts.

b. Book News

i. Audio book

I'll soon be announcing the release date for my audio book! I'm eager to review the master recording next week when I'm home, and if all is in order I'll be able to "go to press."

More on that asap!

ii. Public readings from my poetry book

Had a wonderful book reading (from my book of poems "The Sweetest & the Meanest") a couple of weeks ago at Malaprop's Bookstore in Asheville, NC. I love reading at indie bookstores, and I welcome suggestions and connections for bookstores along my tour routes. [E-mail your thoughts, ideas etc to shauna@tomkimmel.com and Shauna will set me up!]

(Thanks to Virginia at Malaprop's.)

c. Teaching

I've finished my 3 songwriting retreats for the summer - Cedar Run, Swannanoa, SummerSongs - and they've each been a joy. Don't know why it's been only the last couple of years that teaching has come together for me, but I'm off the deep end with it now, and I look forward to many classes, workshops and retreats in the future.

3. Recommended

Not long ago I highly recommended the German-made Oscar winning film "Lives of Others" (during its theater run). The DVD will be released next week (Aug 21), and if you have yet to see the film I urge you to rent it and set an evening aside. Turn off the phone etc as it is a vital film, one that you'll never forget.

4. Food for Thought

"You know what Lenin said when he heard Beethoven's 'Appasionata'? He said, 'If I keep listening to it, I won't finish the revolution. Can anyone who has heard this music, I mean truly heard it, really be a bad person?'"

- Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (from Lives of Others screenplay)

Peace!
Tom
