If I Fell From Grace With You

This was one of my first collaborations with Lisa, and it was magical. I woke up one morning with the title in my head, reached over and scratched it on a pad. I had a vague idea for a melody, but when Lisa came over a couple of hours later and I shared the line with her she immediately sang the melody of the title phrase. Without thinking I sang the rest of the line, “…I’d pray I’d never fall in love again.” We looked at each other in amazement, and the song tumbled out.

I love many old Anglican hymns, and this song, I think, has some of the feel of one. I tend to bend notes with melody and sing a lot of triplets, but this song has more of a keyboard progression–no blue notes. Plus, I love its spare poetry.

If I fell from grace with you
I’d pray I’d never fall in love again
And if our ship should sail from view
I’d never want to feel another breath of wind

If you lost your faith in me
I don’t know what I’d do
And I’m not sure who I’d be
If I fell from grace with you

If you turned and walked away
Would the world keep turning ‘round?
Would you hear the words I’d say
Somewhere inside the hollow sound?

If you never called my name
How could I answer true?
If you turned and walked away
And I fell from grace with you?

Would my life roll on
As if gray were blue?
As if right were wrong
And December, June?

If I never touched your face
Would morning find the light?
Would the rivers lose their way
A careless moon forget to rise?

If you wandered from this place
Would roses know to bloom?
And who would hold me close this way
If I fell from grace with you?
If I fell from grace with you
