–Along with scores of other writers Jeff and I were invited to a private screening of "We Were Soldiers," a Vietnam story starring Mel Gibson. We were told the movie had tested extremely well and therefore held great promise. I was skeptical since so many writers were vying for the same slots, but I enjoyed the movie, and Jeff and I decided to give it a shot.
We played the song for the music supervisor, and he loved it. Later he told us it was one of the director’s favorites, so naturally we got excited. Soon, however, we were informed that the decision had been made to use only score for the film-no songs. This in turn was disappointing, but then we learned that an album was to be made of songs "inspired by" the movie. Our song was one of the final selections, and the label looked for an artist to record it. Eventually, an arrangement to have Keith Urban sing it fell apart at the last minute when his manager couldn’t work out a deal with the soundtrack label!
