Greetings from the Nashville airport! About to board for Tupelo, where I’ll be sleeping in Mama’s house one last night before handing its keys to the new owners tomorrow and driving south with Layla the Dog and Archie the Cat.
Never imagined I would live in the Deep South again, but here I go, all the way down to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. And what has it taken to get me there? A fine woman. (Naturally!)
OK, time’s a-wasting. Now for the News in Brief… along with a new poem, a little musical food for thought, a Recommended for Spring Top 10 and a little tour info.
2. News: Raft (& Harmonize) with me in Idaho August 24-29
There are several compelling reasons to take a trip like this—a luscious time slipping down a pristine river through spectacular landscapes, dining on excellent victuals and enjoying evening music-making—not to mention the good company of kindred spirits who’ll be coming along…. (You get the idea.)
Speaking personally, one of the most worthwhile things about a trip like this is the opportunity it presents to hit the re-set button. Interrupt the spin. Reconnect with water and earth. Slow d-o-w-n…. And damn, I need it.
FYI by late summer the river is milder than it is wilder, but it’s still flowing along in the sweetest way. It’s also warm enough for a dip—and there are also geothermal springs where we can ease back along the way.
When: August 24-29, 2017

3. TK Poem of the Month
Lame Excuse for a Birthday Card
I hope you’re having
the sweetest birthday!
I’m raising a cup
of Starbucks finest
in your honor
(and enjoying 2 shortbread cookies)
at Logan’s Terminal A food court
while they fuel a Delta jet
outside the window.
And Margaret I pray
you got the positively awful
while my lift to the workshop
because, believe me
it was the least worst
of a pathetic, paltry selection.
4. Spring Food for Thought: Wisdom in the key of life…
“What comes from the heart, goes to the heart.”
—Ludwig van Beethoven, composer & pianist (1770-1827)
“If ya ain’t got it in ya, ya can’t blow it out.”
—Louis Armstrong, musician & composer (1901-1971)
5. Recommended: 10 Things to do this Spring—a little advice I could use myself.
01 Get outdoors and enjoy the swirly spring weather.
02 Leave the phone in the house.
03 Donate the books and CDs that were taking over your life to the Friends of the Library.
04 Lie on the floor with the dog and make room for the cat in bed.
05 Look at the stars. (Jupiter’s super bright right now.)
06 Take a big break from television.
07 Those winter clothes you never wore this winter? Donate.
08 Let the pups (feet) breathe—I like Oofos flip flops for arch support.
09 Get a little sun. (Not too much!)
10 Dig out the old baseball cap.
…And none of this costs money!
6. Looking for Booking: Next fall & winter… everywhere.
I’ll be in Europe through June, then staying close to home for a few weeks… but by autumn I’ll be ready to play and teach. If you’d like to host or promote a show or workshop… or would like to pass along ideas etc. for your neck of the woods… we’d love to hear them!
