Tom Kimmel’s (Short & Sweet) May 2016 News

1. Greetings!

Have mercy! Is it really May? All the rain has sure made for spectacular flowers and a forest of pyschedelic green leaves. While walking Layla this morning a bluebird landed on a post near us just as a mother duck marched her little regiment across the path a few steps ahead. Boy that got me going… And we saw our first snake! Hey it’s warming on up, and yet the nights are still lovely. It’s a fine thing.

2. News

a. Waymores in CA this coming week!

On Thursday-Sunday, May 5-8, the Waymores willl perform in Monterey, Carmel, Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz. In and out, just like that! We’re so looking forward to seeing old friends and fans (and making waymore new ones).

(The Waymores: Don HenrySally Barris & me.)

b. Tom’s Annual NC Writing Rereat coming up fast (June 5-11)…

Hey I’ve still got a little space at my upcoming 3rd Annual Doe Branch Ink Songwriting Retreat near Marshall, NC. I have so loved these retreats! And (I cannot lie) so has everyone who’s joined me these past couple of years.

What we have here is a sweet opportunity to spend a week writing songs and hanging out in a relaxed, natural setting. Affordable tuition includes all first-rate catered (tasty, healthy) meals. Our schedule allows for ample one-on-one mentoring, time to write alone or with a partner, plus free time to socialize, read, rest or explore the beautiful countryside.

BTW our groups have been made up of novices, old pros and everyone in between. All are welcome. For more info, click HERE. Bring your project, or I’ll give daily song prompts… or both, as we wish.

b. Then I’m off to Crete… and Ireland.

i. After the Doe Branch writing retreat I’ll be off to Greece (Crete) to co-lead a writing class with talented Swedish singer-writer Eva Hillered….

ii. …and then on to Ireland to host my annual west coast tour.

Speaking of Ireland, we’ll soon be taking reservations for next year’s (2017) tour. These tours, which I am ultra-fortunate to host each summer for Inishfree Tours—are special for me beyond words. For more info—including how you can reserve a space—click HERE.

c. Solo & Trio Shows: We’re booking!…

…for the rest of 2016 and beyond. I’m talking about listening rooms of all types, plus songwriting and poetry workshops, lectures, book readings and any combo of the above. I love it all. And we’re booking ’em.

iSolome! (Oh.)

iiTriosall three!

That would be the Waymores, the New Agrarians and the Sherpas.

3. Poem of the Month

There’s nowhere I feel much at home
Yes here or there for a minute or a day
In your arms for a night
Or an afternoon
Or in church the odd morning
In the walk in the rain
The breath for the high note
The next line, the verse
The rest in the hollow of the song
Yet rarely the same place twice
And never for anywhere long

4. May Food for Thought

“Every spring is the only spring, a perpetual astonishment.”
—Ellis Peters, author (1913-1995)

“No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.”
—Hal Borland, author, journalist (1900-1978)

“It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want—oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”
—Mark Twain, author (1835-1910)
